English Language

Cambridge IGCSE English (First Language) is international in outlook, whilst retaining a local relevance. The course allows learners to :

  • Develop the ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively when speaking and writing
  • Learn how to use a wide range of vocabulary, and the correct grammar, spelling and punctuation
  • Develop a personal style and an awareness of the audience being addressed.

Students are encouraged to read widely, both for their own enjoyment and to further their awareness of the way in which English can be used. Cambridge IGCSE English also develops more general analysis and communication skills such as synthesis, inference, and the ability to order facts and present opinions effectively.

The course requires students to draft and complete a writing portfolio; writing to inform, describe and evaluate.  Speaking and Listening is assessed individually and in a group. The examination tests students’ ability to synthesise, collate and comprehend information.

Whatever further studies are planned, a clear and fluent style of writing with a developed personal voice, along with the ability to express ideas orally, will stand students in good stead for life after Leehurst Swan School.

Sixth forms demand a grade C or above in English Language as an entry requirement to A level courses in any subject.  The same applies to most employers.
