Salisbury Schools Year 7 Netball Festival
The Leehurst Swan Year 7 team have only started playing competitive matches since Christmas and had only played one, albeit very successfully against Farleigh School.
It was a bitterly cold afternoon up at Salisbury High School, but the girls seemed unaffected by the weather, they were just keen to get on and play. All the matches were 5 minutes each way, 10 minutes in total.
Their first match was against Avon Valley and Leehurst were quick to take the lead and Avon Valley had yet to score by half-time. Leehurst went into the second half feeling confident and won this match 9-0. With Romilly being voted player of the match, with one victory under their belt the girls were feeling very positive.
Their second match was against Trafalgar and having won the toss the Leehurst girls used this to their advantage and quickly scored the first goal. The goal shooting of both Lucy Simmonds and Annabel Harding was consistently accurate as in the first game, this together with good defensive play and quick accurate passing resulted in a second convincing win 7-0. Lucy was voted player of the match.
The girls next match was against Godolphin B with two good wins they were totally unphased by their opposition and had them working hard to keep possession of the ball. Godolphin scored 1 goal, but Leehurst scored 5! Imogen playing GD was voted player of the match.
This meant the girls were through to the semi-finals and were drawn against St Edmunds. Leehurst’s passing and shooting proved more accurate and before they knew it the match was over and they were the winners with a score of 6-2. Lucy’s shooting gave her the player of the match award.
Leehurst were in the final! They were up against Godolphin A.
This was a fantastic match with both teams fighting to get and keep possession of the ball and get it to their goal shooters. At half-time the score was 3-3! In the second half with so few minutes to play for each goal was matched by an equaliser, but then in the last minute Godolphin went 6-5 ahead and Leehurst just could not get the ball to their shooters before the final whistle. But what a game, the girls were disappointed at losing but nevertheless triumphant at having reached the final and losing by only one goal. Annabel was voted player of the match by the Godolphin team.
Very well done to all the girls who played.
