Y10 pupils recently participated in a Modern Foreign Languages Speaking Competition, held at the Royal High School in Bath. The competition was organised by the Routes into Languages Initiative, led by the University of the West of England. Various Schools from the South and South West took part. There were different categories: KS3, KS4 and near-native speaker. Pupils had to give a presentation in front of an audience in either French, Spanish or German. All pupils performed extremely well, despite their nerves. Project Director Irene Wilkie said the aim was to encourage more young people to continue studying languages. She said “It is so encouraging in this difficult time for foreign language teaching in our schools to see that there are still many young people who really do possess excellent foreign language skills and have an enthusiasm for language learning. The older students were a real inspiration to the young ones and even the teachers commented that it had given them a boost to be involved in such a celebration of foreign languages.”

Wilfie Cross won a prize and Matthew Day and Lottie Hawkins gained Certificates of Merit. It was a fun day and everyone enjoyed the challenge.

This years Senior Sports Day has to be one of the best, in terms of weather, interhouse sportsmanship and new records achieved.

The day started with the Year 7&8 field events followed by the Year 9&10, three records were broken in the Junior competitions, Christopher Phillips broke the High Jump record of 1.15m established by Sam Hudson in 2009 by clearing 1.25m. Sam Hudson also in Year 8 broke his own record of 24.8m in Javelin by throwing an impressive 30.6m. In the Junior Girls shot putt competition Amy Parsons broke the record of 7.20m set by N.S. Payne in 1995 by outing the shot 8.5m. No records were broken in the Senior field events. Matthew Day came very close to doing so in the Boys High Jump. Danielle Scott with a personal best of 1.44m in the High Jump was unable to match the record of 1.50m set in 1998 by R.Hammer. However, Danielle did break the Girls 800m record quite convincingly in the afternoon by knocking 7/10ths of a second off the existing record of 2.43m set by J. Grundy in 1991. Danielle has represented the school and the county in this event this year at the South-West Region Athletics Championships, narrowly missing selection for the England Schools Athletics Championships. By coincidence the Junior Girls record was also broken this year by Anna Lever in Year 7 who beat the 1989 record of 2.47minutes set by J.Grundy by 4/10ths of a second running it in 2.43:19secs. Anna’s performance in the Senior IAPS Athletics Championships earnt her second place in the event and selection to run at the IAPS National Athletics Championships at Birmingham on Monday 5th July where she came a very creditable 5th.

Four other records were broken on the track in the afternoons events, Christopher Phillips established a new record of 1.09:07secs in the Junior Boys 400m. William Garston broke the Senior Boys record in the same event recording a time of 1.06:18secs, the previous record being 1.06:61secs (2004, H. Cameron).

The Year 7&8 Girls relay team broke the previously held record of 1.10:46secs with their time of 1.03:93secs, the Year 9&10 Girls established a new record of 1.02:41 the record of 1.03mins being convincingly beaten.

Constable House were the deserving winners of the shield, all nine record breakers coming from members of Constable! This will be a hard act to follow next year!

Students from Years 7 and 8 have recently enjoyed a visit to Brittany. We stayed in a comfortable hotel in St Brieuc .We visited the picturesque town of St Malo , the History Museum and we walked around its impressive ramparts. We also explored Mont St Michel with its narrow hill main street and its stunning Abbey with magnificent views. The pupils enjoyed participating in the various activities such as buying crêpes for lunch, choosing fruits at the Saint Servan Market, speaking French for the quizzes and town trail activities and still had time for a splash in the sea at the end of each day where we all enjoyed the beautiful wide beaches of Brittany. The trip was a success and pupils and staff thoroughly enjoyed it.

Captain Daly agreed to visit the Pre-Prep as part of their ‘People who help us’ topic as his son attends the school. It was a wonderful experience for the children.
