Year 6 pupils visit the Mayor of Salisbury

Pupils in Year 6 were invited to meet the Mayor, Cllr John Abbott, JP at the Guildhall. The children enjoyed learning about Oak Court, the role of a judge, the history of the Guildhall and especially enjoyed standing in the dock and visiting the cells!

They also saw some of the silver, the charters, the Jury Room, the Mayor’s parlour ( Judge’s room), the loo used by Queen Victoria on a visit to Salisbury, the maces and spoon and the lovely rooms at the Guidlhall.

German students enjoy cooking at Waitrose

Year 9 German students visited Waitrose studios to do some German cooking.

They made mini Black Forest cakes, which proved as popular as ever. They learnt about the history of the famous cake and had fun too!

Prize winning Poet, James Carter visits Leehurst Swan

The prize winning James Carter visited Leehurst Swan to inspire children in the world of Poetry. Ages from Nursery up to Year 6 experienced the works written by James through lively performances by the poet himself. The performance for KS1 involved a gentle, mellow show – but highly interactive – full of action rhymes about bugs, bubbles, pirates, dinosaurs and travelling around the world. The Performance for KS2 was a lively, quirky show with poems and guitar music aplenty, poems on all kinds of topics – from wolves to angels, woolly mammoths to brains and even electric guitars! The children were then able to experience a wide range of poems themselves through various poetry workshops. This ranged from: Free verse forms; Using expressing language; Imagery and metaphor Syllabic poetry; Kennings and Rhythm and rhyme/narrative. By the end of the two days there was a real buzz around the school and the pupils were definitely motivated and enthusiastic about their own writing.

Pupils cheer on the Queen as she arrives in Salisbury

Leehurst Swan pupils lined the streets of Salisbury with flags in hand to welcome the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh on their visit to Salisbury. The sun came out just in time and the children thought it was very exciting to see the Royal party.

Year 4 visit River Bourne Community Farm

Year 4 pupils visited the newly developed River Bourne Community Farm and the Whitebridge board walk. The visit was organised by the Art department at Leehurst Swan as a result of a request from Laverstock Parish council for the generation of some wildlife pictures to be included on a forthcoming public information board. The visit formed first hand research and the animals proved to be very popular amongst all the year four pupils. The weather was extremely kind to us and we were able to see the pigs (Rosie and Elsie) in their sties and handle the chickens as well as collect eggs from their hen houses! That morning a calf had been born in the main field. Afterwards the children enjoyed the board walk and saw the some of the wild life that they have been asked to draw and paint. We all wish to thank the staff at the farm for showing us around and for making the trip so enjoyable.

Duckling joy for Prep Pupils

Prep pupils in Nature Club enjoyed seeing this year’s ducklings in school – thank you to Mr Scrase for bringing in some ducklings to school for pupils to see! Eggs are being incubated in Year 2′s classroom too.

£400 raised for Readathon

Prep pupils have raised over £400 in aid of Readathon through sponsored reading. Readathon was founded by author Roald Dahl and aims to help sick, brain damaged or seriously ill children in hospital.
